Spotlights illuminated the night operation of placing of a 40-foot English elm on the tiny lawn surrounding St. Patrick’s Cathedral, October 18, 1939. A dozen skilled tree movers placed the giant elm, with three more trees planted on the Fifth Avenue side of the cathedral the next day. They all matched trees that line the avenue in front of Rockefeller Center, across the street.

I'm not getting into The Giving Tree discourse...
#personal#delete later#idk i just saw a post of the “alternate ending” comic on my dash and everyone praising it as an improvement and “fixing” the original#which i kinda resent#while tulli and i was taking my nephew to a book store we walked around the kids section and found the giving tree and we read through it#and i was so stricken by how profoundly sad it is. it's not a happy story#in the end both versions tell the exact same lesson. but one flat out tells you and the other makes you sit with a pit in your stomach#and work to find the answer#i dunno it's kids literature but kids literature is important. i don't wanna discredit anyone's bad memories with the book but also i think#sometimes it's ok to make kids a bit sad and upset with fiction.#tweet that goes what if romeo and juliet didn't kill themselves and explained to the audience that family feuds are bad”#idk you can't seriously read the original book as an adult and say it's glorifying self-martyrdom#when the final drawing of the book is of an old tired man sitting on arotting stump with his hat fallen to the ground#again i don't wanna invalidate people's feelings if they enjoy the alt version i think it's really nice too. but the original has its#purpose too. imagine if at the end of the lorax they show that the boy did it and replanted the world happy ending#wait they did that in the movie shit#i dunno i just love somber children's literature. tulli and i are talking about moomin right now and how the series ends with the moomin#family just leaving. and nobody gets to say goodbye to them. their friends have to find ways to live with the emptiness they've left behin

"The best calumnies are spiced with truth," suggested Qavo, "but the girl's true sin cannot be denied. This arrogant child has taken it upon herself to smash the slave trade, but that traffic was never confined to Slaver's Bay. It was part of the sea of trade that spanned the world, and the dragon queen has clouded the water. Behind the Black Wall, lords of ancient blood sleep poorly, listening as their kitchen slaves sharpen their long knives. Slaves grow our food, clean our streets, teach our young. They guard our walls, row our galleys, fight our battles. And now when they look east, they see this young queen shining from afar, this breaker of chains. The Old Blood cannot suffer that. Poor men hate her too. Even the vilest beggar stands higher than a slave. This dragon queen would rob him of that consolation." (Tyrion VI, ADWD) Should you reach your queen, give her a message from the slaves of Old Volantis." She touched the faded scar upon her wrinkled cheek, where her tears had been cut away. "Tell her we are waiting. Tell her to come soon." (Tyrion VII, ADWD)
I appreciate how George explicitly makes the point that slavery isn't just about the economic aspect and that it is, at its root, built on subjugation. Even the people who don't directly benefit from it will fight to keep the system in place just so they have someone beneath them. That's why all the criticisms of Dany not replacing the economy before abolishing slavery fall flat, because that wouldn't have worked either. The slavers would've fought to enforce slavery regardless because they enjoyed the power and privilege it granted them. We also get insight onto the slaves thoughts on Dany's revolution, which makes it feel like this perspective is only coming from the consideration of the slavers and not the people actually being subjugated. The slaves want to be free, they want Dany to free them, and that shouldn't have to wait until the people who think of them as property decide it's acceptable.

I never understood how people were confused about the fact I want a small home with a large enough yard to grow food, with my nearest neighbor being miles away, being completely surrounded by trees.
Like I grew up helping raise farm animals, with helping harvest crops and dairy. I grew up with secret recipes handed down through many generations, helping my neighbor garden. I grew up helping build walls, and nailing shingles on roofs. I grew up learning how to live alongside nature, how cruel and loving Mother Nature can be. I grew up listening to thunderstorms as I fall to sleep, and hoping the wind doesn’t tear the roof. I grew up raising new born puppies, and helping friends with home work.
I grew up knowing life is hard work for everybody, and to welcome someone into your home is to say “oh look at how the sun shines through the trees, I’ve made grape juice and apple pie, do you want some? You’re safe here and I care about you”.
I want to live a secluded life, I want to get as far away from any city that I can. I want to grow and preserve my own food. I want a hound dog or two at my side while I spend the night knitting away.
I want to grow numb to how beautiful where I live is, so when you, my dear friend, travel all the way up to visit me deep in the woods in my one bedroom home, you go “wow it’s beautiful up here” and I sigh remembering “yeah, it is, isn’t it?”

Driving to town the other day, I saw this truck filled with dead trees, polluting the air with black smoke. It is the epitome of disrespect, and it almost made me cry. It brought to mind the John Prine song, Paradise, with the following lyrics.... they tortured the timbers, and they stripped all the land. There were three more trucks following this one, and they were filled with dead trees, and they all emitted black smoke, too. I live amongst beautiful, giant trees. They provide the air that I breathe. They are gorgeous. I love these trees. Seeing them being hauled away by air polluting trucks is very upsetting to me. They leave huge stripped areas and pretend to plant trees to make it alright. They think that we don't know that the saplings they plant will take decades upon decades upon decades upon decades upon decades to even come close to replacing these beautiful, giant trees that they haul away. The black smoke just adds insult to injury. I wish I knew how to stop them from destroying the land and air and teach them how to be respectful and do this in a sustainable fashion. Alas and alack.... 😥
Save our forests... save our trees... be respectful of nature.... please 🙏🏼 🙏🏼 🙏🏼

I think maybe it was a mistake to figure out how to get Minecraft running smoother on my laptop because I spent literal hours today in a craft-mining fugue state. All I know is when I started I was living out of half a cave and when I ended I had a god damn plantation style manor of a house.

Avocado didn't like yesterday's heavy rain and since more is on its way, I've used a tomato cage as a temporary support.

I just had two dreams in quick succession that had me groggily coming out of them with tears in my eyes. Both of them centered around some symbol that was clearly of importance to me, but that I don't actually recognize. One I saved from its own guilt so I could embrace it again, and the other I tried to nurture back to health when she was on her last limb. Both dreams spoke to how much I cared about the figures in them— but I don't know that fox, I don't know that tree. Why did I want to reconnect with them so badly? Why did I want to save them so badly?

ooc post!!
so I just saw that some lers have names besides their roles right and ever since I drew Steamgent (GS but the things are flipped... oh whatever I should just call him GS 💀) I'm like: he looks like a Felix. Why? I don't know- fix it felix bro /j so yuh if u want u can call him Felix bro
and he runs a repair shop n stuff so like yus because he didn't sell his thneed and was very sad and he was too sad to throw it like in the og so bro just walked home and everyone forgot about the thneed in his universe so he started a repair and robot business and got successful from that so since he only cut down the one tree the Lorax in this universe actually doesn't mind GS and because he felt bad for the Lorax he planted the tree back so yaya ummm.. what else did I need to elaborate???
Oh right GS actually can only see from one eye because of the hair covering his eye yes it's not just a design choice but what's the reason then?? well that's for me to know and you to wonder.. or ask.. but anyway um if you have ooc questions drop them in my ask box and put ooc at the top or bottom of your ask thanks btw the hair thing if anyone cares is not ooc technically since it's LORE
- silly guy that runs this blog
also shout out to sock they're poggers ok that was cringe but anyway real!!!

i always had the goal of going into biology for environmental science to find ways to reverse climate change. still might try for a degree again someday. anyway, i love humans and nature in equal parts. we are resoureceful and the planet is breathtaking in its complexity. we can, have been, and must be stewards of it. what we will NOT do is approach it with the arrogance of the colonizers. i don't think there's one simple solution. for example, people in the past have implemented species to control a pest problem that turned out themselves to be invasive. that's why I'd do research, and that's why many solutions have to be implemented slowly. i would never say that we can fix environmental damage without the root cause being eliminated. but im not imagining a world without humans. i think about how we all can live a good live alongside all the other life in the world. yes, even the smallest creatures. i love insects as well. algae, fungus, microbes. in fact i think they're the key to our future. the little guys have been workhorses of the planet. before algae the atmosphere was unbreathable. before insects and microbes, things wouldn't decompose, it just piled up and that's how we have oil and coal.
so i want to help fix the environment for all the living things on the planet and that includes us. we are not an acceptable casualty.

so what you’re saying is you want to be a hobbit with a hobbit hole
perhaps a mer-hobbit, with a mer-hobbit hole created perhaps by corals with which you live symbiotically as they provide you a home and you try to take care of them
that last bit may be a stretch tho-
good post anon
